Alternative Rotary Member Ideas

Many community members would like to join a Rotary club but constraints such as meeting time of the local club, financial issues, family responsibilities, work needs, and availability of time prevent membership.  When Rotary clubs create innovative membership categories that address these concerns, more interested individuals become Rotarians.

In this section, you will find ideas implemented by other Rotary clubs in order to attract members that would otherwise be unable to join Rotary.  The 2016 Council on Legislation made it clear that clubs have the flexibility to modify attendance rules, membership types, multiple meeting times, etc.  What follows is an excerpt for a document regarding the 2016 COL.

Membership
Rules and qualifications. Clubs may determine their own rules or requirements for transferring members, dual membership, and honorary members. They are also free to continue following the traditional provisions for these members. The only mandatory qualifications for membership are that Rotarians must be adults who have demonstrated good character, integrity and leadership; have a good reputation in their business, profession and community; and are willing to serve in their community and around the world. A club could offer family memberships for those that want to include their family, junior memberships for young professionals with leadership potential, or corporate memberships to people whose employers want to be represented in the club.  Each type of membership can have its own policies on dues, attendance, and service expectations.  Rotary will count these people in your club membership and consider them active members if they pay RI dues and District dues.  See related pages in the “Unique Rotary Membership Options” section for additional information.
