District Literacy Projects to Consider in 2016-2017
District Governor Clyde Church announced this spring that Amy McBride, Montrose Rotary Club, and Judy Casey, Colorado Springs Rotary Club, will be the Literacy Co-Chairs for the District.
The two Co-Chairs will communicate with club presidents in District 5470 to learn about projects that are in action now and to suggest other possibilities to consider.  We provide a few suggestions here.  Please consult the website for each project for more information.
IMAGINATION LIBRARY:  Each month, registered students, from birth to age five, receive an age-appropriate book in their mailboxes from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.  It costs $30.00 a year to support one child in receiving a book a month.   The Imagination Library manages the program and mails the books to each home.  Lindsay Kellar, Contact in Grand Junction: www.gjimaginationlibrary.org.  Main website:  http://usa.imaginationlibrary.com
DICTIONARY PROJECT:  The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we encourage our sponsors to give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.   www..dictionaryproject.org
SOUNS:  EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY: - Children learning to read - a letter-sound program with touchable symbols

LIBRARY SUPPORT:  A Library Card for Every First Grader:  Amy McBride of the Montrose Rotary Club and Montrose Public Library
will provide information about this possible project.  amcbride@montroselibrary.org or 970-964-2547.
