A District 5470 Guide to
Attending a Rotary International Convention
By: Paulette Church
Several members of District 5470 have asked for help in planning their RI Convention trip and their time will there.  In an effort to help with this and after attending four Conventions, I am putting together these suggestions, which will change as others contribute their ideas as well.
First, each Convention has different issues regarding travel, size, venue, and the quality of the host committee’s planning. I suggest your arrive one day before and stay at least one day after the Convention.  That said, there are some common steps to take:

District 5470 Rotary Youth Exchange Inbounder Orientation
September 23-25, 2016
The Inbounder Orientation for this year’s exchange students was held in Durango September 23-25, 2016. All 30 students hosted by District 5470, who represent 24 countries, were present for the training mandated by the US State Department. Durango and Pagosa Springs sponsor six students.  The program began Friday night at 6:00 pm. All students spent Friday and Saturday nights with families in Durango. Saturday morning involved discussions on subjects such as insurance, travel, and sexual harassment/abuse. In the afternoon, the students enjoyed a tour of Mesa Verde. That evening, they attended the Durango High School Homecoming dance and reportedly had a great time. They returned to their host communities after a morning program on Sunday.

The Membership Cadre Program
Is your club struggling with growing and or maintaining membership?  You might want to consider requesting a cadre specialist.  What is a cadre specialist you ask?  Cadre specialists are hand selected for their position. These individuals are trained qualified personnel with skills in membership development and growth, retention, and in facilitation. The cadre specialists exist to assist districts and clubs.  In many cases, a new face with new ideas may be exactly what clubs need to jump-start their membership growth and retention.  If your club would like more information about the Membership Cadre program, click HERE for the August Cadre newsletter and a wealth of membership links and resources available on the district Membership team page.  The August Cadre newsletter is at the top of the column on the left of the page.

Dear Rotarians,
The first six months of the Rotary year has already passed and I wanted to update you on our collective progress to date.

1.   Because of our strong focus on "Service Above Self" and diverse community service projects, district membership has increased a net of 1% since July 1st instead of dropping 1.5% to 2% as we have historically seen.
2.   Club and district "Rotary Days" have been a success this first year.  Where Rotary Days have been held, the community better understands who Rotarians are, what our mission is and how we help identify community needs and build the basic fabric of the community.  Additional Rotary days are in the planning phase for the spring.

As most of you have discovered by now, RI has a new website. It's a two-part site - one for non-Rotarians who want to find out about Rotary, and one for Rotarians. Especially the part for Rotarians is difficult to navigate. RI has finally produced a few video tutorial and here is the link to the one for Rotarians:

From the passenger’s seat:

DG Clyde and I are having such a wonderful time with our Rotary travels. From New Zealand and Australia (passenger seat on the left side) to Durango, Snowmass Village, Eagle, and Carbondale; Rotarians are wonderful hosts and doing important projects meeting serious community needs! They are having fun and helping to bring hope and peace to our world by Lighting Up Rotary.

Welcome to Rotary District 5470

As we begin a new Rotary year, I invite you to join us in bringing the hope, service, joy, and resources of Rotary to improve our communities and our world.

Rotary is changing...what isn’t?  Did you “dial“ your phone today (that’s if you know how a dial phone works) or did you text a note to a friend or business?

I want to be sure all clubs are aware of the new opportunities and new expectations of Rotary.  RI is the “greatest humanitarian and service organization in the world” because of the incredible progress we have made in eradicating Polio and the thousands of other projects led by 33,000 individual Rotary clubs around the world.  The Rotary Foundation consistently receives the highest ratings from nonprofit evaluating organizations because of its very low cost of administration and its transparency to all Rotarians.
